Competitive Selection Program

The following program at Ogeechee Technical College is a competitive selection program. This means that you can be admitted to the College but will have to complete additional steps to be considered for the specific program you are interested in. Each program has different selection criteria, and you should refer to the program website to learn more. If you choose one of these programs on your admissions application and are accepted to the College, your program of study does not reflect whether you have been selected for a program cohort.

Program Length

The PN program begins every spring and fall semester and will take 3 semesters to complete.

All applicants must submit the appropriate program-specific online Interest Form for Competitive Admissions.
Please be sure to list the correct Term of Admittance you wish to be evaluated for.

Attend a Competitive Selection Workshop

Applicants for Practical Nursing must attend a Competitive Selection Workshop. The required workshop session dates are listed below. Students will select the link on the day and time of the event for virtual sessions. No registration is required. Please be on time, as no students will be allowed to enter the room after the workshop has begun.

Selection Process

Ogeechee Technical College sets a specific number of slots for each competitive selection program. All students who meet the minimum requirements for competitive selection programs by the posted deadlines are entered into the selection process.

For the Practical Nursing program:
  • Selection will be based on the TEAS scores ranked highest to lowest

In the event of a tie, the highest score from the Anatomy & Physiology section of the TEAS will be used to determine ranking.

Required Prerequisite Coursework

As a mandatory part of the competitive selection process, each prospective LPN student must successfully complete EITHER: 

The ATI Nursing Essentials Course

  • Available in the OTC Bookstore
  • Cost: $239

Once a prospective LPN student pays the fee in the OTC bookstore, they will be added to an ATI Nursing Essentials Course cohort. The student must purchase the course at least 8 weeks before the deadline; the course typically takes 8-12 weeks to complete.  All students seeking to be in the upcoming LPN cohort must successfully complete the Nursing Essentials course.

To receive credit, students must submit/upload their Certificate of Completion with their Interest Form for Competitive Admissions before the deadline.

OR
 
Submit documentation of one of the below from an accredited college: 

  • Allied Health Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC)
  • Diploma
  • Degree

In order to receive credit, the students must submit/upload an official transcript showing the institution attended, the TCC/diploma/degree earned, and a completion date. Certificates from professional organizations and training providers are not accepted. This documentation must be submitted with the Interest Form for Competitive Admissions before the deadline.

Aptitude Examinations

Applicants must complete the required aptitude exam and achieve the required minimum composite score of 60. (Note: A minimum of 60% on the HESI A2 Entrance Exam may be acceptable through 12/31/2026 if the exam was taken from 1/1/2025 to 12/31/2025. HESI scores will not be accepted for admission starting on 1/1/2027.) More information on the required aptitude exam and helpful study information can be found on the Assessment Center webpage.

Students must take their aptitude examination in the OTC Assessment Center.  Scores cannot be transferred in from external sources.

The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) exam is a standardized test used by Ogeechee Tech to evaluate candidates for potential selection into a competitive selection program. The TEAS exam is intended to gauge a student's achievement in a medical setting. The TEAS test covers reading, math, science, and English and language usage skills.

  • TEAS exam scores will expire five years after the exam date.
  • A student will be allowed three (3) testing attempts within a calendar year on the TEAS. The exams are given several times each semester, and attempts can be scheduled 30 calendar days apart.
  • TEAS scores from other schools will not be accepted.
  • The cost for all TEAS attempts is $70/exam. Students will be administered the entire exam during each exam attempt. All testing fees are non-refundable.
  • A student may schedule, find out when the test is administered, and find helpful study resources by visiting the Assessment Center website. Study guides are also available in the Library

Good Behavioral Standing: 

Applicants must be free of any academic misconduct violations, such as documented plagiarism, cheating, or other violations of the OTC Student Code of Conduct.

Selections will be made as quickly as possible after the deadline. All applicants will be notified by text and email of their acceptance or denial for selection into a competitive program.
