The summer pre-K class from Smiles, Giggles, and Hugs Childcare Center recently visited the Dental Assisting program at Ogeechee Technical College. Students in the Dental Assisting program talked to the pre-K students about developing good oral habits such as brushing and flossing, and about making good snack choices. “This was a fun and educational experience for our students as well as the young ones from Smiles, Giggles, and Hugs,” said Yvonne Jenkins, Dental Assisting instructor at Ogeechee Tech. “The children learned by playing a flossing game and a game where they chose snacks which make teeth ‘happy or sad’. They also brushed Dan the Dinosaur’s teeth and sat in a dental chair.”
The Dental Assisting students took their show on the road in June with a visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County. The Boys and Girls Club participants learned about dental care using some of the same games that the Childcare Center’s students experienced, and Ogeechee Tech students also discussed the dangers of tobacco and drugs.
“Educating patients is important, and these sorts of opportunities allow our students to gain valuable experience in patient education techniques,” stated Jenkins.
